The Green Pitcher Plant is a carnivorous plant found in limited areas of northern Alabama, North Carolina, and Georgia, and is the most critically endangered of all Pitcher Plant species.  The plant lures, traps, and digests insects by using a tubular rolled leaf which collects digestive juices at the bottom.  The opening of the tube is covered with nectar-secreting glands on which insects lose their footing and fall into the bottom of the tube.  Colors can vary from all green to light or heavily veined with pigmented throats, and may take on a pink or red flush as they age.  They also produce large yellow flowers in Spring. The habitats of Pitcher Plants are subject to frequent fires, which help maintain the open and high light environment of the savannas, bogs, and wetlands where they are found.  Their decline has been caused by lack of fire management which decreases the habitat, and rising popularity of their leaves used in the florist industry.  Although all wild Pitcher Plants are protected by state and federal laws, wanton harvesting of the leaves are detrimental to the plant’s ability to trap insects and thrive.
