Weighing less than a pound, the Pygmy Bunny is the smallest rabbit in North America, and is the only rabbit in North America that digs its own burrow. Burrows can be extensive, with multiple, interconnecting chambers and several entrances. It is distinguishable from other rabbits by its small size, short ears, brown or slate gray color, small hind legs, and the lack of white fur on its tail. Found in the semi-arid regions of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, and Washington, they live in areas of abundant tall, dense sagebrush, on which they are extremely dependent not only for shelter, but food as well. The Pygmy Bunny has become endangered due to habitat loss and degradation, disease, and predation. With a lifespan of 3-5 years, 50% of all offspring do not survive their first five weeks of life, and the species in general has a mortality rate of 88%. Captive breeding programs have been initiated in the hopes of revitalizing the Pygmy Bunny population.
