This mysterious and endangered hummingbird exists only in a remote valley of northern Peru. Unique among birds, it is the only one that has only four feathers in its tail. With white, green, and bronze colored feathers, its most remarkable feature is the males’s two long outer racquet-shaped tail feathers that cross each other and end in violet-blue discs, or “spatules.” Widespread deforestation, ongoing habitat loss, small population size, and limited range all contribute to this beautiful bird’s declining numbers.
