Ground Rollers are a group of birds found only in a small area in southwestern Madagascar. It is a spectacular bird, unique in appearance, looking like a combination of a roadrunner, a pitta, and a roller, which is how the bird earned the name “chimaera,” which was a composite of a lion, goat, and snake from Greek mythology. It has a long brown tail with dark barring and blue edges. The species spends most of its time on the ground foraging for food. The birds are monogamous and nest in three foot deep holes they excavate themselves in slopes and embankments. This vulnerable species is threatened by habitat loss stemming from clearance of land for firewood, charcoal products, timber, slash-and-burn agriculture, and livestock grazing. Conservation initiatives have been identified as a top priority.
