The Green Sea Turtle is the largest of all hard-shelled sea turtles and can be found throughout warm tropical waters around the world. Feeding primarily on seagrasses and algae, this diet is thought to give their body fat the greenish hue from which they take their name. Adults have been known to grow up to five feet long and weigh 700 pounds. Green Sea Turtles migrate long distances (up to 1400 miles) between their chosen feeding sites and the beaches from where they hatched. Females usually mate every two to four years; then, digging a large hole on the beach with hind flippers, will deposit 100-200 eggs before covering the nest and returning to the sea. Individuals of the species are known to live up to eighty years in the wild. Green Sea Turtle populations are still in danger because of illegal hunting for their flesh, long-term harvest of eggs, pollution, disease, drowning in fisherman's nets, and habitat loss due to human development. Continued human exploitation compromises efforts to recover this endangered species.
