These delicate, aquatic creatures are found in the more tropical waters of the West Atlantic.  Most mate for life, with the males responsible for hosting the birth of their babies inside their pouches within 10-14 days.  If a mate is lost, it can take a very long time to find another. Over 25 million seahorses are harvested or dried each year for the aquarium trade, tourist trade, or for use in traditional eastern medicines.  Such unsustainable levels of harvesting have created concern for the survival of these beautiful, mysterious animals.
