These delicate, aquatic creatures are found in the more tropical waters of the West Atlantic.  Most mate for life, with the males responsible for hosting the birth of their babies inside their pouches within 10-14 days.  If a mate is lost, it can take them a very long time to find another. Over 25 million seahorses per year are harvested or dried for the aquarium trade, tourist trade, or for use in traditional eastern medicines.  Such unsustainable levels of harvesting have created concern for the survival of these beautiful, mysterious animals.
